Teatro La Fenice

Theatre and acting had always been an important social component and had a great appeal and attraction for the people in Venice. The “Teatro La Fenice” had been inaugurated in 1792, a few years before the fall of the republic, but not much later, in 1836, it was completely destroyed by a fire.

The rebuilding by the Medena brothers began immediately. As far as possible one tried to comply with the original taste of the late 18th century when reconstructing the decorations, the golden woodcarvings and the wood and stucco sculptures.

The big oval auditorium sits about 1500 people. A number of additional halls in the classic design complete the building.

It was again gutted by a fire in 1996 and after a renewed period of reconstruction, which lasted a number of years, the “Teatro La Fenice” can today be seen in its old glory with its distinguished elegance of former times.
